The World Script Institute was founded to promote the awareness of the ecology of scripts. Understanding and maintaining the ecology of scripts are important because the ecology of scripts provides grounds for the diversity of scripts, especially in times when the independence for many native scripts is under the threat of extinction. Following World Script Symposia 2014 and 2015, World Script Symposia 2016, organized by the World Script Institute, aims at making aware of the overall implications and values of the scripts from the perspectives for history, civilization, and society. Another important goal of the event is to promote the importance of sustaining the diversity and ecology of the scripts of the world with clear vision and full vigor.

World Script Institute is delighted to announce the third World Script Symposia: Haengnang from 3rd October to 9th October 2016 in Nakwon Music Mall and Ikseon-dong, Seoul. Haengnang is a room used by servant or traveler in the past; it is ‘frontier of the house’ as well as the ‘open space’ that relates the interior and exterior. Haengang, the symbol of ‘expansion’, which embraces and supports the differences, implies the possibilities of variety and the movement towards its exploration. Recently, against zeitgeist, cultural diversity is threatened; based on the current circumstances with critical awareness, World Script Institute and have been suggesting the future and aroused interest in the ecology of the scripts, which has the value of the variety comprehensively. The symposia, staging in Nakwon Music Mall and Ikseon-dong, aims to explore the script’s possibility of expansion and its way of diversity.

The world’s largest musical instrument shop complex Nakwon Music Mall is alike hometown in the heart of every musician, and it is the place dissolved amongst one’s memories. Individuals gathered by the music as a medium, and since music is the expanded concept of script- the variations of repertoires of life are played; this offers the imagination that would expand distinct denotation of script. The name of Ikseon-dong was derived from locations of lined-haengnang, where it was placed at the both transept of Nudonggung (樓洞宮), the shrine of Jeongye Daewongun (全溪大院君). Ikseon-dong was also called Iknanggol, and embraced people from different classes. For modern human beings, who are familiar with restructured roads- mainly for automobiles and vertically structured apartments, Ikseon-dong filled with low-roofed Hanok and road shaped as ㄱ,ㄷ,ㅁ of Hangeul is a place with ‘old novelty’. We walk among the roads, where the vanished substances are asleep with traces of memories. Following the works of artists who open and close the doors of haengnang, we walk towards the secret of script as memory unit has.

Script delivers strong messages in promised structures. Wandering among the alleys, symposia Haengnang, along with script and while accumulating information of time, will remind us the deficiencies. This will reveal the beauty of script that determines novelty and extends its life in labyrinth of memories- in Nakwon Music Mall and Ikseon-dong.
