Understanding symbolic meaning of haengnang in humanistic and artistic perspective, and in this view, introspecting realities through a variety of script faces. Mediating meaning of issues of language on the border living in haengnagchae and predicting the future of script.

[2] Language on the Border Infographics

[Language on the border in Europe 4: Weltgevierte]
The aim and process of creating infographics based on languages on the borders of Europe will be explored under Weltgevierte, the key term of Heiddeger’s philosophy. Meaning of ‘fourfold’ and ‘script haengnang’ will be explored first. The motive, background and academic importance of selecting European language on the border ‘fourfold’ will be explained in the next stage. Lastly, from designer BOM Roya, the actual process of creating infographics will be delivered: the summary of collaborating academics and art, the conflict between academic’s requirements and design realization, and the work process and self-assessment toward completion of work.

[Alleys Guideline]
In Alleys Guideline, the alleys in Nakwon-dong and Ikseon-dong and the related stories and helpful information for the visitors will be implied. The project for producing the guidelines in media content, which would be practically used for online application, will be explained and represented.

[4] Analysis of PungJeong.Gak Alley Dance

This conference will explore PungJeong.Gak, the work directed by Song Joowon that was exhibited in World Script Symposia 2015; the forum will be presented in the following context:

[GU Yeonsang]
Introduce the aim of PungJeong.Gak conference, explore the core of the dance and examine ‘future possibilities’, which establishes movements of dance into script.

[SONG Joowon]
Introduce the aims and the whole process of actualizing a plan, explain the movements of dancers, the meaning and images of the movement, and globality of live world that can be found in history of the alleys.

[KIM Eunggyo]
Aim to criticize the video PungJeong.Gak literally-artistically. Analyze changes of meaning, alteration of the images, attitude changes of the users, and so on. Additionally, after exploring the pitfalls of the video, the directions for improvement and guidelines will be suggested.

[SHIN Jungah]
Criticize PungJeong.Gak in ‘video contents’ perspective, suggest supplement for weakness and possibilities for various applications, and introduce new ways to edit PungJeong.Gak through the application of film techniques.

[6] Reading Children’s Books in World Script

Participants: Lorraine Rossi, Hasmik Kababyan, Heba Hussein Mohamed Abdel Bakey, Daniel Ploss

Participants read aloud the fairy tales written in their mother tongue. Although the stories share the same context, they are delivered with different scripts; aiming to find superior ways to increase ‘variety of culture and characteristics’. In order to revive the script diversity, this would offer a chance to experience that after all, uniqueness of people’s lives using the script should be enjoyed meaningfully.

[French]
Lorrain Rossi reads The Fairy of Loc’hs Island (La Groac’h du Loc’h). It is a story of an engaged couple living in poverty. It is a story of the couple while they are in Loc’hs Island to make money.

[Armenian]
Hasmik Kababyan reads Shy Bride(ԱՄԱՉԿՈՏՀԱՐՍԻՀԵՔԻԱԹԸ). The difficult situation happened in a village was caused by a modest and shy woman who was living in the village.

[Egyptian]
Heba Hussein Mohamed Abdel Bakey reads Legend of Osiris( أسطورة إيزيس أوزوريس). It follows stories on Egyptian King Osiris, and his brother Set, who is trying to overthrow the king.

[German]
Daniel Ploss reads Little Red Riding Hood (Rotkäppchen). The fairytale revolves around a young girl called Little Red Riding Hood, who walks through the woods and meets a Big Bad Wolf on the way to deliver food to her ill grandmother.

The gap between memory and letters or forgetfulness. Research and find how letters accumulate, blemish, and traverse memory in our lives through artistic spaces.

[LEE Wonho]
Describe IK-SEON-MUN-DAP, the work that delivers the hidden sides, the different discourses and layers of space in the process of establishing a space-ness in the specific place, through letters and then further augmented in reality.

[JUNG Seung]
Explain Rainbow From Warned Land, exhibited in World Script Symposia 2016, with its background and related descriptions. Show performance with objet, which modified a toy called ‘Laser Top’. After recording the spreading sentences and coherent sentences or words through a Morse Code transmitter inside the work, by operating and repeating the top. The performance will deliver impromptu conversations among sentences or words.

[WON Yongjin]
Explore emergence of authority that classify human handwritings and categorized handwriters’ establishment of non-authority subject. Suggest Autographic Democracy.

[Kim Park Project]
Spotlight on making standard for categorizing master calligraphy and cacography in artistic perspective. Additionally, Kim Park Project at ‘World Script Symposia 2016’ will test new aesthetic possibilities of cacography.


[8] Medium Development and Script Acculturation

Research synthetically characteristics of script change process and sociocultural changes according to medium development. Furthermore, discuss on space-ness of script and script acculturation through digital computer.

[LEE Minkyu — Media-morphosis and development of script]
The changed historic course will be explained from ancient times to the current state. Moreover, development and ancient course of script will be introduced in the aspect of ‘authority’, ‘social change’, and ‘digital’ and so on.

[KIM Sangho]
Under the theme, “Desire and Prohibition of Script”, with emergence of script, newly emerged desired system and history of pressured desire will be presented. Awareness and changes of recognition method caused by emergence of script, and its influence, will be explained.

[LEE Donghu]
Under the topic of “Speech Man and Script Man”, this talk will develop thoughts on how script- the speech technology- reconstituted human awareness, verbalization and humanity.

[9] Granshan Workshop, “Universial Typogram”
[Design of Symbol (letter as image) as New Visual Communication (that can be Seen, Read and Felt)]
GRANSHAN means writing of sing in Armenian. It is a foundation that hosts GRANSHAN Type Design Competition, the international conference as well as the non-Latin typefaces design festival in collaboration with Typographical Society in Munich and Armenia. The competition aims to ‘support documenting human thoughts and languages beautifully’. GRANSHAN regards that Seoul has numerous similarities with: Yerevan, Armenia, where the GRANSHAN competition has begun, the creation background and the story of Mesrop Mashtots, who made the Armenian script, Hayots aybuben, thus participates in the World Script Symposia. The winners of the competition for the global non-Latin font designs and the designed banners, where around ten different non-Latin scripts implied, will be exhibited together.

[10] History, Structure and Design of Armenian Script
Speaker: Edik Ghabuzyan

Focusing on origin, orthography and font design settlement process of Armenian language and script, which have similar origin and creation process of Hangul — relations of scripts of around European states (Armenian, Georgian, Russian, Greek and Hebrew) will be proposed. In order to overcome the difficulties of enlargement of Latin typefaces, the descendants face fewer new font designs with their local cultures implied: Edik Ghabuzyan, who has been making efforts for research and design for his life, will suggest his diverse font designs and philosophy.

Presented by Professor LEE Sangbin, a panel discussion of four languages on the border; Corsican, Breton, Basque, and Occitan will be explored with their histories, cultures and differences. The meaning of language on the border presentation, future of language on the border and appropriate policy for keeping language on the border, will be diagnosed.

Zen disciplinant Jinwol and Buddhism researcher KIM Wonmyoung will analyze meaning of script with history of Zen. They also propose the new Buddhist perspective towards interpreting script, and the discussion is developed by notifying position of looking at script in the Zen world and meaning in asceticism.

[14] Age of Writing, Emancipation of Speech

Gutenberg printing culture has weakened human orality. Again, printing was weakened by the development of mass media and the second age of human orality is about to begin. From the beginning of the broadcasting age in Korea, the new occupation, a news presenter, has emerged; discuss about orality in the broadcasting age with his perspective by inviting news presenter. How does LEE Gyejin, who was one of the first news presenters of KBS, recognize the broadcasting age in Korea with his life experiences? In the aspect of cultural history, the oral age will be examined by the questions of professor LEE Changhyun and the oral statements of LEE Gyejin.
