A ‘script’ is a system of written signs consisting of visual elements for the purpose of communication. Any such code can be usually decoded and understood, even if the code itself is forgotten or secret. There are codes which have maintained their mystery. One example is the 15th century manuscript called ‘Voynich Codex’ which contains over 200 pages in an apparently alphabetic script. The sign shown is the ‘initial’, a decorative letter at the beginning of the page. On a shopfront it turns into a abstract sign, a logo. We don’t know its ‘pronunciation’, nor the meaning of the word following it, no one has decoded this script. We do not understand. We may not understand most things.
